Matico is a tropical, evergreen pepper shrub that grows vigorously in the high jungle in the Andean Mountains. The verdant, highly fragrant lance-shaped leaves are uniquely green on top and silver underneath, and when brushed or crushed they release an aroma likened to a fresh, cool mountain breeze.

Our unique Matico Essential Oil is distilled from the leaves and flowers harvested by hand from the wild shrubs. The sustainable yearly harvest and steam distillation process provides jobs to the Andean community.

This botanical-biotic shrub was named Matico after the soldier who first discovered its potency when he used the leaves to bandage an injury that healed quickly with reduced discomfort and redness. Since then, the Andean community has continued to use it in compresses and poultices to sooth irritated and inflamed skin. The oils’ cooling sensation makes it an assuaging addition to massage oils and saunas.

Matico is also used locally in inhalations for freer breathing. When added to steam baths and diffusers or sniffed directly from the bottle, Matico’s magical mountain essence may cleanse airways and relax respiration.

“The almost universal feature of the odor of Matico leaves, regardless of their origin is a strong, camphoraceous, pepperlike or minty odor with a pronounced woody undertone.” ~Steffen Arctander, Perfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin
