Whether you like to call it mountain misery, Chamaebatia foliolosa, or the Miwok name (and my prefered) ‘kitkitdizze’ you’d have to have the experience of being on the western side of the Sierras, ‘cause it doesn’t grow anywhere else. Everything about this plant is distinct: the fern like, yet sticky leaves, the cascading effect of kitkitdizze carpeting the forest floor, and of course, the scent. KKD is the smell of home. When I first moved to Nevada City, I found a little loop that I hiked everyday. The trail went through a changing forest of incense cedar, manzanita and pine- and KKD was the constant. The impression of my new home, with it’s dramatic beauty along with my sense of new beginnings is forever tied to the spicy, pungent scent of KKD.
While salt sprays are often associated with the beach, coconut, or summer, the truth is that salt sprays are for all those other days you don’t have an ocean dip at your fingertips.
Personally, I see salt as a grounding substance, I associate salt with earth and home.
Spirit and Salt Mist is a gift from my home to yours. Virginia cedarwood, and clary sage essential oils along with the tincture of KKD evoke the forest aroma. The scent of the spray is light, as if you laid your head down for a short nap right off the trail. On dry hair, a few mists spritzed like a halo around your head will give you a nice bit of texture and umph. On damp hair- spray down with a good dose to inspire more wave and moveable bod.
