In The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils, Kurt Schnaubelt recommends Monarda as an essential oil for the bath and shower as it is “refreshing and gentle for easy use directly on the skin… a radiant tonic and powerful emotional uplift; comes with some tingle, which may be too strong for some skin types, so it can be diluted” with other essential oils such as Lavender or Frankincense. He also writes, “On the other end of the spectrum [from Tea Tree] is Monarda fistulosa from Quebec, an aromatherapy speciality, it has a brilliant fragrance and, for most individuals, leaves a slightly sharp but pleasant tingle on the skin when used in the shower. It is one of the most effective antiviral essential oils and is effective for upper respiratory and urogenital infections.”
